Professor Elisabeth Poutier brilliantly defended her doctoral thesis on February 1 at the Conservatoire National des Arts & Métiers in Paris.
Entitled "The Fair Procurement Role: Ethical North-South Relations within Fair Trade Sectors", the subject of Professor Poutier's thesis is the "fair procurement role" within businesses that are members of the French platform for fair trade, the PFCE. From a methodological perspective, her research, based on an abductive research approach, focuses on an analysis of two fair trade sectors in different phases of development (textiles and agrifood). Her results demonstrate that a fair procurement role in a business adopts supplementary ethical and economic considerations that provide a structure for the North-South enterpreneurial approach. They also highlight harmonious organisational and individual approaches, as well as the specific skills required of a fair procurement role within the companies under study.
The jury members were particularly impressed by this innovative work, which opens many doors in a field that has not been truly researched on a scientific basis.

8th International Conference for Young Scholars at ESSCA – 25-27 February 2010

From 25 to 27 February 2010 ESSCA’s Angers campus had the pleasure to welcome the participants of the 8th WISH Conference (International Conference for Young Scholars), which was successfully organised by the Centre for European Integration.
Under the timely topic of ‘The Visible Hand – European and Global Perspectives on Financial Market Regulation and Economic Governance’, more than 30 junior and senior scholars as well as legal practitioners from four continents entered fruitful debates on the role of a regulatory framework and legal tools in governing financial markets and global economy in general.
Following the footsteps of institutions such as Humboldt Universität Berlin, University College Dublin or Université Paul Cézanne (Aix-Marseille III), ESSCA was the first business school to host the WISH event. The research findings of the conference will be published in a special issue of the European Law Journal and a bi-lingual book edited by the Bruylant publishing house in Brussels.
Wei Shen, Professor at ESSCA, brilliantly defended his doctoral thesis entitled « Chinese students circular migration and global city formation: a relational case study of Shangai and Paris » on December 15 at the University of Loughborough (UK). The members of the dissertation defence committee acclaimed the achievement of a very original research.
Prof Shen's thesis examines circular transnational mobility of Chinese students and graduates between Shanghai and Paris in the context of historical and contemporary international migrations from China. During his doctoral fieldwork, Professor Shen has been a UACES visiting scholar at Sciences Po de Paris (CERI/CNRS) funded by the European Commission and Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies, and conducted empirical research on the motivations and experiences of 60 Chinese business students at Grandes Ecoles in Paris and the career trajectories and experiences of Chinese business graduates who returned from Paris to Shanghai (the so-called 'Haigui' or 'sea turtles' in English). His work contributes to the better understanding of circular mobility of students and elites, the emergence and significance of transnational economic and cultural networks, and the formation of Shanghai as a global city.
Stéphane Fauvy, Management Professor at ESSCA, brilliantly presented his doctoral thesis entitled "The Instrumentalisation of Organisational Skills: an Analysis of the Identification and Evolution of Strategic Skills; the France Telecom Case" on November 6, 2009 at the University of Angers. The jury congratulated Professor Fauvy and his thesis was awarded a very honourable mention.
The subject of the thesis is based on the issue of the identification and evolution of strategic skills. An analysis of literature can be summarised in the form of a chart in which the issues of creating meaning and power are key elements. Based on a longitudinal analysis conducted within France Telecom, the main conclusions of the research reflect the depletion of resources and changes in the hierarchical relations between organisational skills and the contextual nature of the definition of strategic skills. These conclusions demonstrate the benefit of taking into consideration the evolution of the representations of strategic skills within a structuring process, which process reveals a duality between the social skills of players and structural constraints.
